Working remotely

What is remote work?

Remote work is a type of flexible arrangement that allows employees to work from a remote location outside of an office environment. It is based on the concept that work does not need to be done in a specific place to be executed but more emphasis placed on accountability. It requires a trusting relationship between the employer and employee; or if you subcontract out your works - it requires trust between the client and contractor for projects to be carried sufficiently.

How do people work remotely within the construction industry?

Each work place will vary depending on the service and your role within the business. If you are governed by a time schedule then signing in and signing out is needed where other arrangements can include completing tasks at your own convenience. For many workers, the pandemic has seen many business accelerate the concept of remote work and the limitations and benefits of this concept are clear. In the construction industry, working remotely includes having a small office set up at home (desk, laptop, mobile phone, printer & scanner, relevant computer software, monitors etc.) and having access to the company server to access files with regular communication via email, phone call or video conference. Traditionally speaking the majority of office roles (project manager, contract administrator, estimator, architect, engineer) within the construction industry consists of working independently and having team meetings 1 - 2 times per week, the rest of the time is spent working on a particular project or dealing with subcontractors, supplier, clients or consultants over email or phone. With remote working within the construction industry, all regular tasks can still be done with more emphasis placed on accountability, time management and good communication skills within your organization.
